It's a rainy, chilly day
here in Florida - and the bands are dead.
Soon the
DX Rebels will begin
their attempt at Bouvet Island and I'm
wondering about the previous DXpeditions to
this frozen world... For complete info and
"official" web links to the upcoming
3Y0I
DXpedition to Bouvet -

out our 3Y0I page here.
Surprise! There has been only one - yes only
one - previous and successful
real
DXpedition to Bouvet. OK, two, if you count
the disputed W4BPD/3Y0 QSO's.
There have been a few scientific teams that
had a "ham" in the group but those were not
major activations and not full fledged
DXpeditions.
The last DXpedition attempt to Bouvet was
made by the
3Y0Z
team in January of 2018. Unfortunately, that
effort had to be aborted, just offshore from
Bouvet, due to mechanical failure.

The Infamous LH4C -
W4BPD / 3Y0 "DXpedition" - 1962
Famous DXpeditioner, Gus Browning, was
purported to have made a solo DXpedition to
Bouvet. However, some reports dispute that
claim and allege that the entire operation
was done from a ship just off shore. I
wonder if those QSL's are still good for
DXCC credit?
If you have a story, recollection or know of
a web link to any previous Bouvet activation
please email me and we will add it to this
page.
3Y5X - 1989/1990 - Club Bouvet - So
far it's been the one and only "real"
DXpedition to Bouvet Island...
Twenty nine years ago today, on December 14,
1989 the M/V Aurora departed Montevideo
bound for Bouvet. Here's one accounting of
the 3Y5X adventure:
http://www.dxcc.info/eng21/3y5x.htm
3Y5X is the
only documented previous
DXpedition to Bouvet Island. They managed
49,000 QSO's in sixteen days.

Other
non-DXpedition activations
of Bouvet Island:
3Y5DQ and 3Y1VC - 1978 / 1979 Thor
Winsnes and John
Snuggerud
N4BQW
/ 3Y0C - 2000
Astronaut Chuck Brady was popular with hams
worldwide during his stay on Bouvet Island.
He worked mostly SSB but he did make a few
CW contacts as well!
3Y0E -
2008
Petrus, ZS6GCM, operated 3Y0E from Bouvet in
2008. This was the very last op of any size
at all from Bouvet Island!
Next? The 2019 Bouvet
DXpedition - 3Y0I
