This Weekend's DX! - Friday May 29, 2015 01:00 UTC

The CQ World Wide WPX CW contest this weekend - ATNO's?

Besides testing your operating skills, the WPX (and other big contests) can provide unique opportunities for you to work "all time DL1YAF/VK9L DXpedition to Lord Howe Islandnew ones" as well. The contest itself often sees DX ops from exotic places that are not very active and this may be your best shot at an entity that's only QRV a few times a year.

Many high power "big gun" DXer types (and a ton of little pistols too) will be working the CW contest, causing reduced activity on all of the SSB bands and also on the WARC CW segments. When a rare or semi rare DXCC does pop up on those non-contest frequencies there'll be a lot less competition and QRM to deal with. Pileups will be much easier to bust.

For those of you new to DXing - participating in the bigger contests can fill your log with ATNO's quickly. With very modest rigs, some hams have even worked DXCC in just one weekend!

Finally, by the end of the contest almost everyone is struggling to run their score up. The loud stations have all worked the rarer ones so now the DX will be aggressively trying to hear and work the weaker signals for additional points and multipliers. If you run QRP, mobile or just have less-than-optimum working conditions this may be your best chance to snare some of these DX entities. Good luck!

Other DX coming to a frequency near you this weekend...

Onto this week! Today I'll be covering new DX ops from Lord Howe Island, Tuvalu, Niger, Malta, Eastern Kiribati and Greenland.

Besides the new DX covered in today's update, the 5Z0L / Kenya, 6Y5/DL5DI / Jamaica,  J38NN / J38MM Grenada, OJ0W / Market Reef, TF/F5LIT Iceland, ZF2WA / the Cayman's and FS/K9EL / St. Martin operations from last week are all still active. Some will be QRV for another few days, some even longer. Review their operational details in the May 22 edition of "This Weekend's DX!"  I will also list them on this page following this week's new DX listings.

CQ-WW-logo-th.jpg (14311 bytes)As you scroll down the page you will see links to help you find, work and QSL the DX operations that are planned for this weekend.

If you'd like to do a "Mega" search and have a simultaneous spotting report - updated in real time - of every new DX activation featured in "This Weekend's DX!" - Click here for the "MEGA-Spot"  (Courtesy of DX Summit).

For next weekend, there is not too much on the horizon but I will be covering a brief operation to Monaco, a two week activation in the Maldives plus a multi-op DXpedition to Montserrat.

Remember to check back here often for "flash" bulletins plus our scheduled weekly update every Friday between 0000 and 02:00 UTC - which is Thursday evenings in North America and early Friday mornings in Europe.
